A tattoo is a permanent mark or design made on the body when pigment is inserted into the dermal layer of the skin through ruptures in the skin’s top layer. Modern-day tattoos are applied by using an electric tattoo machine with needles that rapidly puncture the skin with an up and down motion not unlike that of a sewing machine.

Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ's

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Laser Tattoo Removal works by producing short pulses of intense light that pass harmlessly through the top layers of the skin. This light is then selectively absorbed by the tattoo pigment and the energy from the light is directed into the ink of your tattoo for a fraction of a second. The laser energy causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles that are then removed by the body’s immune system. Researchers have worked to determine which wavelengths of light to use and how to deliver the laser’s output to best remove tattoo ink. The laser is able to selectively target the pigment of the tattoo without damaging the surrounding skin. The de-inking process has evolved in recent years, from a cringe-worthy, potentially skin-damaging process to a safer, more sophisticated method that uses laser technology. Tattoo removal has never been easier.

What to Expect with Laser Tattoo Removal?

Treatments vary from patient to patient depending on the size, location, the individual's ability to heal, how the tattoo was applied and how old the tattoo is. New tattoos may be more difficult to remove than older ones.
At first the skin's reactions to the laser is tested to determine the most effective energy for treatment. Cooling, local anesthesia, or a numbing solution may be used to minimize discomfort. Your doctor may use additional methods during your session as well.
The treatment consists of placing a hand piece against the surface of the skin and activating the laser light. Many patients describe the feeling to be similar to the splattering of grease on the skin or snapping of rubber bands.
Smaller tattoos require fewer pulses than larger ones. At each treatment that tattoo should become progressively lighter.
The number of treatments depending a lot on the size of the tattoo. Your tattoo may be removed in two to four visits but may require as many as ten. This will be evaluated by a trained professional who will advise you on the process.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Safe?

Thanks to the newer technology, laser tattoo removal has become much more effective with very little risk of scarring. Laser treatment is often safer than many traditional methods of excision, dermabrasion, or salabrasion because of its unique ability to selectively treat pigment involved in the tattoo. Today’s aesthetic lasers offer a proven alternative for safer and more effective ink removal.

In many cases, certain colors remove more effectively than others. Black and blue ink tattoos respond particularly well to laser treatment while green, yellow and aqua pigments are more difficult.

What Should I Expect After My Procedure?

The good news is that there are minimal side effects with the new advanced Laser Tattoo Removal technologies. On occasion, the treated areas may have swelling and may turn red. This usually only lasts for a few hours. Between treatments, it is imperative to keep the area out of the sun and covered. After your procedure, a licensed professional will provide you with additional aftercare tips and instructions.
